Rules of Golf - Rules and Etiquette

The rules can be confusing, but it's important that you follow them to the best of your ability.

Five of the most common rules deal with out-of-bounds, lost balls, unplayable lies, car paths and water hazards. Since these rules need some further explanation, I encourage you to download "A Summary of the Rules of Golf" on the "Rules and Etiquette" section of www.playgolfamerica.com.

Also, if you would like to download the detailed and official "Rules of Golf" book, log on to www.usga.org.  - http://www.knoxnews.com

Putting Golf Tips

When putting, you need to roll the golf ball forward, without the backspin.

A good roll forward includes topspin, which will propel it toward the hole instead of veering off to the right or left of the hole. Too many poor players emphasize just hitting the ball rather than concentrating on how to get the ball to roll properly.

Try some awareness of your foot placement. By putting a little more weight on you back foot you encourage the putter will strike to ball more on the upswing causing a nice roll forward. Too much weight on the forward foot causes a steeper putting stroke and backspin.

So a nice upswing stroke with weight slightly on the back foot with focused concentration on the target should get the ball to it’s destination.

The basic green-side bunker sand shot

The first thing you naturally need to do is to align your feet, hips, and shoulders so that they are angled to the left of the target line.

Your stance should be pointing squarely at the target. The club face should be angled in an open (to the right side)

Position the ball in the middle of your stance, with the majority of your weight on your front foot.

Dig your spikes into the sand and twist your feet until dug in, giving yourself secure, solid footing. Pay attention to the nature of the sand. A soft sand takes a different amount of power than a wet, coarse sand condition to launch the ball. Train your muscle memory to adjust for the different conditions.

Most people should take a normal grip and maintain a full extension of the left arm through impact with the ball.

Hit the ball with a solid blow, slicing through the sand to a full, finished position. Expect the club head to make contact with the sand an inch or so behind the ball. Have the club accellerate through impact.

With a little practice you’ll do fine.

Your golf swing - use the off-season to develop a consistent swing.

"Truth is what stands the test of experience." - Albert Einstein

Use the off-season to implement the best possible swing changes will help to improve your game.

Remember that when you do practice that you are practicing for the sole purpose of improving your swing, not just to hit balls!

Start with a routine to your practice. Begin with a short iron (for example, a wedge) then work your way up through the clubs and finish with the longest club you own (for example a 3 wood or driver).

So what are you practicing? You’re practicing to achieve greater consistency to your performance. Use swing aids if you must, but achieve consistency.

Willie Mays, the third best home run hitter who ever lived, said, I just went out there every day and did a good job, and I did it daily, not once a week . I felt by doing it daily that would make me a great ballplayer. The same applies to developing your golf swing. Find it and practice to refine a consistent swing.

Most golfers think golf is the most difficult game every devised.

Golf loves us and sometimes hates us. How do you get good golf? Well you need a good golf swing. Most golfers practice golf swings using tips they’ve received. Most of the great golf tips come from searching the swings of great golfers. They put the tips into a can and the copy is sent to you and you wind up copying another persons swing.

However each person is unique. You are uniqe.  Does it make sense for you to copy someone else’s swing? Is there a way to have a golf swing you can absolutely trust? In a pressure situation, can you have a guaranteed swing that will allow you to hit good shots each and every time.

There are certain principles you need to know to make consistent shots.

"If you haven’t attained clear true vision, this causes you to lapse into extremes, so that you lose contact with reality.’ – Yuanwu, philosopher

Until the next time,

Avoiding Nervous Jitters at the 1st TEE

Your 1st tee nervousness has a greater chance of vanishing if you take time to warm up. Warming up will mentally prepare your self confidence. Take some practice swings. Stick to an established routine.  Use a club you are familiar with.

"There is no such thing as natural touch. Touch is something you create by hitting millions of golf balls." – Lee Trevio, golfer

"Practice not your art, and it will soon depart." – German proverb

So relax, focus on your target and have a great game.
