Locking in Your Interlocking Grip

Golfing great Jack Nicklaus uses the interlocking grip. It is more complex than both the overlapping and the baseball grips and is designed to get your hands to work in harmony during the swing. Practice is the only way to make it second nature.

Many recreational golfers complain that the interlocking grip is uncomfortable and that their hands don’t seem to function properly during the swing. Of all the swing changes you will experiment with, this one will probably be the most difficult because it will feel the most awkward. This may be due to gripping the club incorrectly.

A simple test to determine if you are gripping the club correctly using the interlocking technique is to old the club vertically in front of you. Place your left hand on the club as you would when taking your grip. Next place your right hand on the club by sliding the right little index finger between the index and middle fingers of the left hand. Now that you accomplished that, lower the club to your contact position.

If for your hand is turned too far under the club in a putting position, start the process all over. You have to get this part right otherwise you will be prone to a duck hook or a block.

Try gripping the club with the little finger of the left hand only and partially interlocking with the fingers of the left. When you lower the club to the contact position, you should find the palm of your right hand facing the target. This is neither "strong" nor "weak," grip. It is designed to work in harmony with the left hand during your swing.

By practicing gripping the club in this manner frequently it will becomes ingrained in you sub conscious. It may feel awkward at first but practice until it becomes habit.
