Eliminating 1st Tee Jitters is as easy as 1, 2, 3

Hi.  Just like you, every tee shot I’ve ever hit has been STRAIGHT down the middle!!  YEAH RIGHT!

There is nothing more frustrating in golf, (especially when money is involved), than “doinking” that first tee shot 150-yards, out of bounds and to the right or left with 40-50 people milling around the clubhouse looking on.

Ok, I’ll admit it – I’ve hit my first tee of the day into the woods more times than I care to remember but haven’t we all?

Why do we play golf?  We play for fun, to score low and maybe even make a few bucks (or a lot of bucks!) while we’re at it.   I’m about to share with you a secret from a golf hustler from the 1940’s that should help us get into a rhythm prior to our first tee shot.

Hitting that first drive of the day can either set you up nicely for a good start to winning the front 9 or put you in a position of playing catch up all day.  Your mind can get all negative right off the bat if you start the round by steaming about that first, tense, wayward drive.

So, here’s a neat trick to cure you of this by relaxing you (not too much, some nervousness is good) and helping you focus.   When you arrive at the course and while you’re taking your clubs out of the trunk, grab a ball and just toss it lightly 12-18” above your head and catch it.

Alternate hands and throw the ball higher and higher, really force yourself to concentrate.

Do this maybe 20-30 times in a row each hand, and then head in and put your name on the list.  Now you’ve signed in, putted a little, taken a few practice chips and swings and now it’s your foursome’s time to go.

Give yourself enough time to repeat this “juggling” one more time for about a 20 count each hand before you tee off.  Have FUN with it, make sure to SMILE and BREATHE while doing it – this is IMPORTANT!

Try this and I guarantee that your focus will be much clearer and you’ll be way looser on that 1st tee, giving your mind and body the clarity they need to just perform and drive that first ball down the fairway effortlessly and start the round off positively!

Now you’ll hopefully be in the middle of the fairway with a decent look at a second shot instead of often facing a harder second shot or a drop for three – this is how you start shaving strokes off your rounds and putting pressure on your opponents!

The first tee is an excellent place to start making money bets as well.  Betting that your first drive will be the longest, straightest, etc ball will do 2 things for you.  If you win it, you’ll obviously win money.

If you don’t, you’ll be fine because you are “training” your playing partners to make loose bets and I’ll be teaching you how to take advantage of these tricks and tendencies in future emails.  So, stay tuned!

Until then, thanks for reading.  Good luck, good hustling.

Mental Golf Tips

Mental tricks can greatly improve anyone’s game as everyone knows. It’s easy to defeat oneself if one does not prepare mentally. Recently I came across this observation that is well worth noting.

It was posted on http://miramichileader.canadaeast.com/article/326791

“You want to be a good golfer. So do you have an arena in which you can win and another where you can test your skills? There are club matches, one-day invitations, regional, provincial and national events. Are you participating at a level in which you can win? If the answer is no you need to gear back and enhance your resume before moving forward.

On the other hand, some people play comfortably with only two or three buddies year after year never testing their abilities at a higher level. They are pulling a Michelle Wie in reverse. If this describes your golf activity you could learn more from a bit of competition than from a week of hitting balls on the range. Occasional higher competition will stretch your abilities and keep you moving steadily forward.”

Michelle Wie never won on the LPGA Tour and was trying to break into the men’s tour. The point of enacting realistic goals is pivotal in moving forward. It’s good to test yourself against the competition, but it’s equally important to gain seasoning before you move up in class.

Keep Your Head Down

Hopefully, this will make you chuckle a bit (even if you have heard it before):

An old duffer was having a particularly bad day at a plush country club. It was one of those days when not one thing went right. There wasn't a sand trap, thicket, or body of water he didn't find.

Nearing the final hole, the distraught old duffer spots a lake near the fairway. He turns to the caddy, embarrassed by all of his repeated failures throughout a long day and sighs heavily.

"I've really sucked today, haven't I? If I had any guts, I'd jump into that lake and drown myself."

The caddy smirked, "Even if you jumped in I think don't you'd have anything to worry about. There's no way you could keep your head down that long."

Thanks for reading!

Confidence Killers

The way you speak and your inner dialog will have a direct effect on your golf game. If you say, "I hope I'll make this putt" or "I hope my golf game improves" nothing is going to change. Change comes from doing. You got to get out there and practice.    You've heard it said, "How do you get to Carnegie Hall? The answer lies in practice, practice, and practice."

Jack Nicklaus said, "Confidence is the golfer's greatest weapon." Meg Mallon, Women's Open champion said: "It's confidence, confidence, confidence, confidence."

One can not succeed at being pretty good or the very best unless they practice. Lee Trevino said if you practice enough and get tremendous amount of confidence, and that's where confidence comes from.

A good game comes from practice.  If you practice, you have confidence. You have confidence because you've practiced.  Not only will you withstand pressure situations; you'll have a greater perspective on the game.

The Mental Game

"Golf is 90% Mental" - Jack Nicklaus
Some 20-years ago, an obscure doctoral study elaborated on the characteristics of good vs. champion golfers.

These are the 8 characteristics of champion golfers:
1. Focus and Concentration.
2. Abstract thinking.
3. Emotional Stability.
4. Dominance.
5. Tough-mindedness.
6. Confidence.
7. Self-sufficient.
8. Balanced state (not tense but not completely relaxed either).

Now, no one has a handle on all these characteristics, but we can work on many of them. For instance, no one can make you feel inferior with your consent; how you see yourself is the way you'll wind up.

The aim is self-development. Each time you challenge and gain traction you'll diminish the fear a little bit. You'll never eradicate the fear of losing. I think it's part of the way we're put together as humans; a healthy "pay attention counselor" signpost along the way. The point is, by challenging our fear we diminish it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than challenging it. The fearful get caught by lost opportunities as often as the bold gain new opportunities.

Golf Shoes Sport New Changes

The latest stability innovations are being incorporated in newly manufactured golf shoes. The golf shoe is changing. There are structural as well as material modifications made toward improving golfers performance and stability. This support is made to coincide with shifts in weight the player exerts during his/her swing.

Reinforced golf shoe points in the injection molding process along with mid-foot shanks make these golf shoes extra desirable. A large variety of companies have made improvements to traction by combining cleats with tread patterns for both linear and lateral grip.

Gore-Tex, Cambrelle and Drilex materials liking moisture from shoes with mater-resistant and water wicking material. Golf shoe moisture management is further helped by having the upper layers sealed so condensation can not enter. That with the breatability enhanced perforated uppers coated with TPU make the new batch of golf shoes unique. Click here for discounted golf shoe brands
